Description:

4-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-pyrrolidinone is a chiral, cycloalkyl compound that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of analgesics. It is synthesized by combining homoserine and pyridine in a stereoselective manner. The synthesis can be performed by refluxing chloroform with benzyl chloride, followed by methylation. 4-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-pyrrolidinone is also an important precursor for the preparation of other compounds such as antihistamines and anti-inflammatory agents.
