2-Hydroxy-5-methylacetophenone (2HMAP) is a low energy electron acceptor that can be reduced by potassium dichromate in the presence of ethylene diamine to form stable complexes. 2HMAP reacts with fatty acids to form medium and long chain esters, and can be used in kinetic studies to investigate the structure of proteins. 2HMAP is also used in biological studies as an electron donor for reduction of boron nitride, which is an electron transfer agent. The nitrogen atoms in 2HMAP are involved in hydrogen bonding and it forms a complex with carbon disulphide, creating a diamine tetraacetic acid (DTA).
