4-Hydroxyphthalic acid is a hydroxybenzoic acid. It is a reaction product of pyrite and protocatechuic acid. It has been shown to bind to the receptor site in phagocytic cells, which may be due to its ability to form an adduct with the hydroxyl group on the cell membrane. 4-Hydroxyphthalic acid also has antimicrobial properties that inhibit bacterial growth by destroying the cell wall and inhibiting protein synthesis. This compound also has pharmacokinetic properties that make it suitable for drug delivery applications. 4-Hydroxyphthalic acid is metabolized by hydrolysis and oxidation, with most of it being excreted unchanged in urine or bile. The reaction products are converted back into protocatechuic acid, which can be recycled again through other reactions to create more 4-hydroxyphthalic acid.
