2-Hydroxypyrazine is a heterocyclic compound that is synthesized by the reaction of sodium carbonate and pyrazinone. It has been shown to be an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) and has been used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. 2-Hydroxypyrazine inhibits the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5, which is responsible for degradation of cGMP in the corpus cavernosum. This inhibition leads to vasodilation and an increase in blood flow to the penis, resulting in erection. 2-Hydroxypyrazine also acts as a competitive inhibitor against other drugs that are dependent on PDE-5, such as sildenafil citrate (Viagra). The pharmacokinetic properties of 2-hydroxypyrazine have not been studied thoroughly.
