• Description: 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone is a phenolic compound that is used as a preservative in cosmetics and detergents. This compound has been shown to cause liver lesions at high doses in rats, but at lower doses, it was not toxic to the liver. 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone also inhibits bacterial growth by acting as an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to be effective against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, among other bacteria. The optimum concentration for this compound is between 0.1 and 1 mM. The toxicity of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone has been examined in vitro, but not in vivo or human studies.
