It can be synthesized by reacting sodium hydroxide solution with chloromethyl methyl ether, followed by hydrolysis of the reaction product with hydrochloric acid. 2HMP can also be prepared from halogen compounds such as bromine or chlorine gas in a xylene solution with sodium hydroxide solution.
