1,6-Hexanedithiol is a thiol that can be used as an electrochemical probe to study the redox potential of biomolecules. Its detection sensitivity allows it to be used in immunoassays with mouse monoclonal antibodies. 1,6-Hexanedithiol is also a powerful reducing agent and can be used in chemical synthesis. This molecule has nitrogen atoms and can form hydrogen bonds with proteins, which makes it ideal for use as a matrix effect. It has been shown that 1,6-Hexanedithiol binds to nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA molecules. It has been shown that this molecule reduces the amount of secondary structure in these nucleic acids. 1,6-Hexanedithiol is also able to hybridize with complementary strands of DNA or RNA due to its high resistance and stability in human serum.
