Hydroxy-α-sanshool is a pharmacological agent that is structurally similar to the natural neurotransmitter, γ-aminobutyric acid. It activates sodium channels, leading to membrane depolarization and neurotransmission. The extent of activation depends on the concentration of hydroxy-α-sanshool in the tissue and can be modulated by physiological mechanisms such as pH, temperature, or nerve stimulation. Hydroxy-α-sanshool has been shown to exert its effects on nerve cells in vitro and in vivo. This drug also has an effect on beta cells and stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic β cells via activation of voltage gated calcium channels. In addition, hydroxy-α-sanshool affects cellular function by altering cell diameter and cell function.
