It binds to the active site of the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which catalyzes the oxidation of hypoxanthine to xanthine and then to uric acid. 2-Hydroxyquinoline inhibits this reaction, preventing the accumulation of uric acid in the blood and urine. This compound also has potential anticancer activity due to its ability to inhibit tumor cell proliferation in human prostate cancer cells. 2-Hydroxyquinoline is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes and has pharmacokinetic properties that include an inhibitory dose (ID50) of 1mg/kg.
