Hematin is a protein that can be found in the blood. It is a globin that contains iron and is stored within the liver. Hematin has been shown to have physiological effects on k562 cells, such as cell lysis, when it binds to ferriprotoporphyrin IX. The ferriprotoporphyrin IX of hematin reacts with oxygen to form an intramolecular hydrogen bond at physiological pH, which causes the protein to break down. Hematin has been shown to inhibit polymerase chain reactions by binding to enzyme substrates, such as DNA polymerases or RNA polymerases. It also inhibits cell signaling pathways in response to metal carbonyls and other chemicals.
