    Description:4-Hydroxy-5-methyl-3-furanone is a natural product that has been shown to have an anti-obesity effect in vitro. It is a cytosolic protein and inhibits the production of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The mechanism of action has been elucidated by means of a model system. 4-Hydroxy-5-methyl-3-furanone was synthesized in vitro and was found to inhibit fatty acid synthesis. The acetate extract also had this effect, but at a lower level than 4HFMF. A possible explanation for this difference is the water vapor content, which may affect the reactivity of the compound.4HFMF is not cytotoxic to V79 cells, but it does cause an increase in cell proliferation in these cells. This could be due to its ability to inhibit GABA synthesis or fatty acid synthesis.
