2-Hydroxyoctanoic acid is a fatty acid that has a hydroxyl group. It is produced by the enzyme 2-hydroxyoctanoyl-CoA synthetase, which catalyzes the conversion of acetyl CoA and malonyl CoA to 2-hydroxyoctanoyl-CoA in the cytosol. This compound can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of triptorelin acetate, an injectable gonadotropin releasing hormone analog that is used in the treatment of prostate cancer. 2-Hydroxyoctanoic acid also has been shown to inhibit skin cells from proliferating, which may be due to its ability to selectively lyse cells that are rich in mitochondria. The molecule’s redox potential is around -0.11 V, making it an ideal substrate for many enzymes with reducing potential. It also has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus a
