Description:5-Hydroxy-4-Methyl 2(5H) furanone is an organic solvent that can be used as a byproduct of the reaction between alkali metal and dimethylformamide. It can also be generated by catalytic isomerization of methyl 2-furoate with hydrochloric acid, yielding enolate. This compound has been shown to have high yield in the conversion of 13-cis-retinoic acid into its corresponding trans isomer. 5-Hydroxy-4-Methyl 2(5H) furanone can be used as a reactant for lipase enzymes.
