D-alpha-Hydroxyisocaproic acid is a dihydroxy amino acid that belongs to the class of monocarboxylic acids. It is used as a precursor for other organic compounds, such as 1,4-butanediol and lysine. D-alpha-Hydroxyisocaproic acid is synthesized by Streptococcus faecalis, which also has the ability to produce it when grown on glucose in an environment with a pH between 7.5 and 8.5. The gene encoding this enzyme has been sequenced and found to have high sequence similarity to human mitochondrial genes. The enzyme can be inhibited by physiological function antagonists, such as aminotransferase activity or glutamate dehydrogenase. D-alpha-Hydroxyisocaproic acid can be chemically synthesized via dehydration of 3-(2-carboxyethyl)thiophene, which is then reacted with formaldehyde and hydroxylamine
