Harmol hydrochloride dihydrate is a compound that has been classified as a group 1 carcinogen. It is used in functional assays to activate cells and induce genotoxic effects. Harmol hydrochloride dihydrate also has monolayer-enhancing properties, which have been observed in experiments using an electron microscope. Harmol hydrochloride dihydrate binds to the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, preventing the binding of the neurotransmitter glutamate and blocking NMDA-induced currents. This inhibition of NMDA receptors leads to impairment of learning and memory in humans. Harmol hydrochloride dihydrate also causes micronucleus formation in mice and enhances DNA damage caused by radiation or β-carboline alkaloids.
