Hematoporphyrin dihydrochloride is an antioxidative agent that has been shown to have therapeutic benefits in the treatment of esterase-deficient porphyria. It is also used in the diagnosis and treatment of other disorders, such as lysis, enhancement, and erythropoietic protoporphyria. Hematoporphyrin dihydrochloride has been shown to induce tumor cell death by reducing ATP levels. This compound is a reactive molecule that can cause damage to the mitochondrial membrane potential and decrease the amount of oxygen consumed by tumor cells. Hematoporphyrin dihydrochloride also increases anti-angiogenic factors (VEGF) by inhibiting the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2).
