4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)benzoic acid is a synthetic drug that binds to the dopamine D2 receptor and blocks adenylyl cyclase, which synthesizes cAMP. This results in a decrease in the binding of dopamine to its receptors, and therefore reduces the amount of dopamine that is transported into the cell. It has been demonstrated that 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)benzoic acid has affinity for both dopamine D4 receptors and dopamine D3 receptors. 4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)benzoic acid has been shown to be an effective anticancer agent in vitro, as it inhibits proliferation of human cancer cells by inhibiting DNA synthesis.
