D-beta-Homoserine is a chemical compound that is synthesized by the enzyme homoserine dehydrogenase. It plays an important role in the synthesis of cell walls and helps maintain cell shape. This molecule also has potential as an antimicrobial agent, which may be due to its potent antagonistic effects against bacteria. D-beta-Homoserine was first isolated from Corynebacterium glutamicum, which is a bacterium used in the production of amino acids. The enzyme responsible for the synthesis of this molecule is encoded by the gene homoD. The wild-type strain contains a region in its genome that encodes for this enzyme, while strains with mutations in this region do not produce D-beta-homoserine. D-beta-homoserine has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential and decrease the expression of proteins involved in fatty acid synthesis when tested on cells from squamous carcinoma and corynebacteria glutamicum.
