Hematein is an extract of the traditional Chinese herb, Alisma plantago-aquatica. Hematein has been shown to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro and in vivo. It's mechanism of action appears to be related to its ability to inhibit the activity of several enzymes, including xanthine oxidase, nitric oxide synthase (NOS), cyclooxygenase (COX), lipoxygenases (LOX), 5'-nucleotidase, and protein kinases. Hematein also binds to cell nuclei and inhibits staining with hematoxylin, which may account for its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis. Hematein has been shown to protect cells from oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide in a dose-dependent manner. The protective effects were observed as early as 30 minutes after treatment with hematein and were concentration dependent up to a concentration of 10 μM. In addition, hematein showed significant protection
