1-Heptanethiol is a fatty acid that can be found in the environment. It has been shown to be electrochemically inert and resistant to cationic surfactants, as well as hydroxide solutions. 1-Heptanethiol also has high binding constants for hydrogen ions and molecules. 1-Heptanethiol is a reactive molecule that reacts with sodium hydroxide solution to form fluorescence products. This molecule also undergoes nucleophilic attack at an alkene carbon atom to produce a reactive species that reacts with the oxygen atoms of water to produce hydrogen peroxide.
