4-Hydroxybenzoic acid is a plant metabolite that is found in many plants and fruits. 4-Hydroxybenzoic acid has been shown to have anti-diabetic effects in vitro. This compound also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of effector proteins such as nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase. The biological activity of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid is dependent on the concentration; at low concentrations it inhibits glucose uptake by cells, while at high concentrations it prevents cell growth.
