7-Hydroxyisoflavone-7-O-glucoside is a flavonoid that has been found to inhibit the production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in human osteoarthritic chondrocytes. This compound has shown to be a lead compound for the treatment of osteoarthritis. 7-Hydroxyisoflavone-7-O-glucoside inhibits MMP activity by binding to the active site and blocking access to the substrate. It also inhibits transcription, which leads to decreased synthesis of MMPs. 7-Hydroxyisoflavone-7-O-glucoside may also have antiinflammatory effects as it inhibits cytokine production from macrophages and downregulates the expression of inflammatory genes such as IL1β, IL6, and TNFα.
