Alpha-homochelidonine is an autophagy inhibitor that inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential and induces significant cytotoxicity. It has been shown to be a potent inducer of histone H3 phosphorylation, which may be involved in inducing apoptosis. Alpha-homochelidonine also inhibits the synthesis of chloride ion channels and other chemical reactions, which may contribute to its cytotoxic effects. In addition, alpha-homochelidonine has been shown to have significant anti-inflammatory activity in vivo as well as inhibiting balloon injury in vitro.
