2'-Hydroxy-4-methoxychalcone (2'OMC) is a synthetic molecule that has been shown to inhibit the growth of staphylococcus and other bacteria. 2'OMC inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the antioxidant system, which is composed of enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. The hydroxyl group on the 2'OMC molecule binds to the metal ion in these enzymes, thereby preventing them from performing their function. This leads to an accumulation of reactive oxygen species and cell death. 2'OMC also has neuroprotective effects and can be used to treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
