4-Hydroxy-3-phenylcoumarin (4HPC) is an inhibitor of protein glycosylation that exhibits anti-Candida activity. It inhibits the synthesis of heparin, which is a molecule that is involved in many physiological processes and is also a growth factor for Candida glabrata. 4HPC has been shown to inhibit the glycosylation of proteins, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of indanedione, an important molecule in fatty acid metabolism. 4HPC can be used as an anticancer agent, although it is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
