The hydrolysis of the ester group in 4-hydroxybenzoic acid 2-hydroxyethyl ester produces benzoic acid and ethyl alcohol. The alkylation reaction of the anion in 4-hydroxybenzoic acid 2-hydroxyethyl ester with deuterated benzene yields quantitatively benzaldehyde deuterated at one position on the benzene ring.
