2'-Hydroxy-2-methoxychalcone (HMC) is a flavonoid that has shown antimicrobial activity against resistant strains of bacteria. This compound binds to the phenolic group of the bacterial cell membrane and inhibits the production of virulence factors. HMC also prevents protein synthesis and causes the death of bacteria by inhibiting the formation of hydrogen bonds between amino acids in proteins. Resistance to HMC has been observed in E. coli, S. typhimurium, P. aeruginosa, and C. jejuni mutants when exposed to antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and gentamicin. Synthetic derivatives have also been developed for HMC, which may have increased antibacterial activity due to their increased lipophilicity and hydrogen bond acceptor properties. The addition of a benzoyl group at position 2' on HMC increases its potency against resistant strains of bacteria such as S. aureus isolates that are meth
