Description

DL-alpha-Hydroxymyristic acid is an amide with antimicrobial activity. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of human pathogens in vitro and has been used as a lead compound for the development of new antimicrobial agents. DL-alpha-Hydroxymyristic acid inhibits bacterial growth by interfering with the synthesis of cell membrane phospholipids, which are necessary for bacterial cell division. The nitrogen atoms in DL-alpha-Hydroxymyristic acid bind to calcium ions, which may contribute to its antimicrobial effects.
