It has been shown to induce apoptotic signaling in cancer cells and to be cytotoxic. 3-Hydroxyphenylmethylcarbinol is synthesized from 2-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, which is found in many natural sources such as plants and animals. This compound can be extracted from hexane or other organic solvents. 3-Hydroxyphenylmethylcarbinol has two isomers: 3HPMC and 3HPMC-O-β-D-glucopyranoside. The latter form has a greater affinity for iron than the former.
