2'-Hydroxydaidzein is an isoflavonoid that is synthesized by plants as a phytoalexin, which are secondary metabolites produced in response to pathogens. 2'-Hydroxydaidzein has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of skin cancer cells in mice, and also inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 1 (IL-1), and IL-6. The structural biology studies show that 2'-hydroxydaidzein binds to DNA and inhibits DNA replication. 2'-Hydroxydaidzein has been shown to be active against plant pathogenic fungi, such as Phytophthora megasperma and Botrytis cinerea.
