2-Hydroxy-4-methylbenzaldehyde is a monomeric carbonyl compound that can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of many organic compounds. It has been shown to form covalent bonds with various metal cations, such as copper and iron. 2-Hydroxy-4-methylbenzaldehyde is also able to form an amination reaction with salicylaldehyde, which produces aniline. This compound can also be used in the manufacture of fluoroquinolones. 2-Hydroxy-4-methylbenzaldehyde has been shown to have luminescence properties and may be used for chemiluminescent labeling and detection of active oxygen, such as singlet oxygen.
