5-Hydroxy-2-nitrobenzaldehyde is an acidic chemical with a pKa of 1.8. It is used as a starting material in the synthesis of quinoline derivatives, which are used in the production of monoclonal antibodies for use in medical research and diagnosis. The chemical reacts with hydrochloric acid to form hydrogen chloride and 5-hydroxy-2-nitrobenzoic acid. 5-Hydroxy-2-nitrobenzaldehyde has an anticholinesterase activity that is inhibited by sodium carbonate. This product is also reactive to an acidic environment and polymer film, which may result in the formation of new compounds through a chemical reaction.
