The yield of this compound from staphylococcus is about 50%. When 4-hydroxy-2-methylbenzaldehyde reacts with chalcone, it forms the hydroxychalcones. This process can be used to identify the presence of 4-hydoxy-2-methylbenzaldehyde in many different organisms. The phenolic ring in this compound can undergo formylation, which means it can be oxidized to form formic acid. This process also occurs in soil bacteria and may account for some of its antibacterial properties.
