4-Hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamaldehyde (4HMCA) is an aldehyde that belongs to the chemical class of phenylpropanoids. It is found in plants such as cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper. 4HMCA has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity. The mechanism of action is not well understood, but it may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis or by inducing reactive oxygen species. 4HMCA has also been shown to act as a substrate for alcohol dehydrogenase in vitro. This compound can be used as a control substance in analytical methods for eugenol and other related compounds.
