Hydroxy evodiamine is a fructus that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. It has a mechanism of action that is not fully understood. The main active ingredient in this herb, protocatechuic acid, inhibits the production of prostaglandin E2 and nitric oxide, which are inflammatory mediators. Hydroxy evodiamine also has anti-tumour activity and can be used to treat cancer. Clinical studies have shown that it is effective against cervical cancer cells. After UVB irradiation, the UVB-induced skin lesions were significantly reduced by hydroxy evodiamine. This substance also inhibits microbial metabolism, which may lead to a decrease in bacterial infections and intestinal disorders such as metabolic disorders and irritable bowel syndrome.
