Ishikawa's reagent is a synthetic chemical that reacts with β-unsaturated ketones to form an enolate. The nucleophilic chlorine atom reacts with the carbonyl of the ketone and displaces the hydroxyl group, forming a new bond between the carbon and oxygen atoms. The resulting product has a single bond between carbon and oxygen and two bonds between carbon and hydrogen. Ishikawa's reagent can also be used in asymmetric synthesis reactions for compounds containing nitrogen or phosphorus. It is used to synthesize ethylbenzene, which has an ethyl group on one side of the molecule, and diethylbenzene, which has two ethyl groups on one side of the molecule.
