Isoxanthopterin is a nucleotide that is used in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect DNA. It is used as a substrate for the enzyme, dihydrofolate reductase, which converts it to dihydrofolic acid. Isoxanthopterin can be detected through fluorescence and its concentration can be determined by measuring the intensity of light emitted from the solution. Isoxanthopterin can also be used as an antitumor agent and has been shown to stimulate an immune response in animal models of autoimmune diseases.
Isoxanthopterin is also used to measure enzyme activities and transfer reactions in biological studies. In addition, this compound functions as a cofactor for some metabolic reactions involving sulfur-containing amino acids, such as cysteine and methionine. The synthesis of this compound requires sodium carbonate and a nutrient solution (e.g., yeast extract).
