a2b1Integrin Recognition Sequence is a chemotherapeutic drug that is used in experimental models of hyperproliferative diseases, such as cancer. It activates α subunit of integrins, which are expressed on cells and mediate the adhesion to extracellular matrix proteins. The drug binds to integrin receptors on the surface of tubule cells and promotes their death by apoptosis. This protein stabilizes hydrogen bonding interactions between two or more molecules that are present at a site of chemical reaction, thus inhibiting cellular proliferation and tumor growth. As a result, a2b1Integrin Recognition Sequence inhibits the proliferation of human serum albumin (HSA) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), which are cell culture models for α subunit-integrin receptor interactions. Analysis of the structure of this protein reveals an integrin recognition sequence motif with three invariant residues: Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD).
