Isowighteone is an enzyme inhibitor that acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme tyrosinase. It is a tetronic acid with a plastid-localized precursor, and has been shown to have antioxidant activity. Isowighteone inhibits the growth of cancer cells and has been shown to inhibit the development of metabolic disorders in animal models. The compound binds to receptors on the cell surface that are involved in regulating cellular responses such as inflammation and oxidative stress, suggesting its potential therapeutic use for inflammatory skin diseases and cancer. Isowighteone also has inhibitory properties against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis.
