2-Iodobiphenyl is a diazonium salt that is prepared by the reaction of phenol with sodium nitrite in an organic solvent. 2-Iodobiphenyl has been used as a precursor for the synthesis of substituted biphenyls and phenols. The hydroxyl group on the biphenyl ring can be selectively replaced by halides, such as chlorine or bromide, to give chlorinated or brominated derivatives. 2-Iodobiphenyl can also be used for asymmetric syntheses, including hydrogenation and Friedel-Crafts reactions. This reactant can also be used in techniques such as constant temperature and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography.
2-Iodobiphenyl's reactive nature means that it is not suitable for use in biochemistry, but it can be used as a substrate for methane monooxygenase and alkene oxidase enzyme assays.
