Iodine trichloride is a chemical compound with the formula ICl. It is soluble in water and organic solvents. It is a reactive chemical species that can react with amines, hydroxides, and phosphates to form chloramines, hypochlorites, or phosphates. This chemical also reacts with hydrogen chloride to produce hydrochloric acid and iodine. The reaction of iodine trichloride with fatty acids yields iodine monochloride and carboxylic acid esters. The presence of iodine trichloride in pharmaceutical preparations may be used as an indicator for the quality of the product. Iodine trichloride has been used as a reagent for titration because it produces a characteristic blue-black color when reacted with strong bases such as ammonia or sodium hydroxide.
