Ibogaine is a psychoactive alkaloid that has been found to have anti-addictive properties. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of drug addiction and alcoholism. Ibogaine also has neurotrophic effects and may also stimulate the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The mechanism of action for ibogaine is not well understood, but it is hypothesized that it interacts with neurotransmitter receptors in the brain such as dopamine receptors, serotonin receptors, and acetylcholine receptors. Ibogaine binds to these receptors and blocks their normal function. This leads to an interruption in the transmission of signals from one neuron to another, resulting in an effect on locomotor activity, receptor activity, chemical stability, whole-cell recordings, energy metabolism, humans and animals.
