4,4'-Iminodiphenol is an organic molecule that is found in animals and plants. It can be found in the mitochondria of animals where it is converted to 4-aminophenol. It has been shown to inhibit adenyl cyclase and acid dehydrogenase, which are enzymes that control the production of ATP. 4,4'-Iminodiphenol also inhibits chloride channels in animal cells, which can lead to respiratory failure. There has also been evidence suggesting that 4,4'-Iminodiphenol may have a role in regulating mitochondrial function. The enzyme activity of endoplasmic reticulum electron transport chain dehydrogenases has been shown to be inhibited by this compound as well as other imines. The imine group on 4,4'-iminodiphenol allows for hydrogen bonding with other molecules and increases its stability.
