The compound binds to DNA, forming covalent adducts with nitrogen nucleophiles. These adducts can be detected by magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and have been shown to induce genotoxic effects in Sprague-Dawley rats. Isoprene monoxide has high resistance to radiation, which may be due to its ability to form crosslinks with DNA, thereby shielding it from the effect of ionizing radiation. Isoprene monoxide also reacts with epoxides to form epoxy esters and is an important precursor for a wide range of polymer materials.
