3-Iodopropionic acid is a polymer that can be conjugated with proteins such as albumin. It is currently being investigated for its potential use as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). 3-Iodopropionic acid has been shown to form herringbone structures in the presence of sodium carbonate, which may allow it to be used as a contrast agent for MRI. This polymer also has an intramolecular hydrogen bond that forms between the glyceric group and the hydroxyl group. Computational methods have been used to predict how this polymer might behave in an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiment, while histological analysis has shown that this polymer does not cause any tissue damage.
