Isophorone is an antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of glycol ethers. It can be used as a solvent in paints, adhesives, and lacquers. Isophorone has been shown to react with zirconium oxide (ZrO2) in the presence of water vapor or humidity at room temperature. The reaction mechanism is thought to be due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding between isophorone and ZrO2. This interaction leads to the formation of a thin film on ZrO2 particles, which can be removed by heating. Isophorone has been shown to have carcinogenic effects in both animal and human studies.
Amino acid sequencing from calf thymus DNA has shown that isophorone interacts with thymine bases through hydrogen bonding interactions. Isophorone also reacts with other proteins through hydrophobic interactions, leading to amino acid changes in these proteins.br>br>
