Ibutilide is a class III antiarrhythmic drug that acts by inhibiting the rapid influx of calcium ions into cardiac cells. It has been shown to reduce fibrillation in patients with structural heart disease, and also to control ventricular rate in atrial fibrillation. Ibutilide has been found to have synergistic effects when combined with other pharmacological agents, such as amiodarone, procainamide, or lidocaine. This drug should be used cautiously in patients who are on concomitant therapy with digoxin or drugs that may decrease the levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood. The model system for ibutilide-induced torsades de pointes is an analytical method based on reaction solution and a model system.
