Isoflurane is a general anesthetic that inhibits the mitochondrial functions and energy metabolism. It binds to the ryanodine receptor in the sarcoplasmic reticulum of skeletal muscle cells, leading to inhibition of calcium release from the endoplasmic reticulum, which in turn decreases cellular excitability. Isoflurane has also been shown to inhibit the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA synthesis. It has been used for bowel disease in humans and as an anesthetic for animals. Isoflurane has also been used for treatment of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria, although it is not recommended for use in children under three months old due to its effects on brain development. Isoflurane has also been shown to cause apoptosis in cancer cells when combined with other chemotherapeutic drugs.
