Isoalantolactone is a natural compound that has been shown to have pro-apoptotic properties in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and HL-60 cells. It binds to the dna binding activity of p53, which regulates apoptosis. Isoalantolactone also inhibits NF-κB binding activity and inhibits tubulointerstitial injury in rats with cyclosporin A induced nephropathy. Isoalantolactone can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent, due to its ability to inhibit the activation of NF-κB. The molecular pathogenesis of this drug is not well understood at this time.
