Indium (III) oxide is a nanomaterial that has been studied for its use in the production of hydrogen gas. It can be used as an electrode material in a water-splitting system, which uses light to generate hydrogen and oxygen gas from water. Indium (III) oxide is also able to catalyze the oxidation of hydrocarbons, such as methane and ethane, with high efficiency. The hydrochloric acid on the indium (III) oxide surface oxidizes these gases to produce carbon dioxide and hydrogen ions. This process is called photocatalytic activity. The optical properties of indium (III) oxide make it suitable for use in photovoltaic cells, while its particle size makes it well-suited for use as a catalyst. Indium (III) oxide has been shown to have sulfation properties that allow it to be used in the removal of sulfates from wastewater.
